Fish Newy Blog

The map does the whole week now

5 September 2026 · 3 min read

168 hours in a week. The site scores every one of them, for all 32 spots, and has done since July.

And the map showed you exactly one of those hours. The one you happened to be standing in.

That is a tide book you are only allowed to open at today's page. I built it that way myself and did not notice for two months.

The short version:

  • There is a slider under the map now. Drag it and all 32 pins recolour through the week.
  • You do not have to touch it. The sentence above the map still says whether now is the best time, and if not, when and where.
  • After Tuesday the track goes hatched. Three days out is a shape, not a promise, and it should look like one.

The Fish Newy map with the week slider dragged to Tuesday morning, the pins recoloured for that hour

Nobody wonders about right now

You are at work. Or you are in the car. Nobody opens a fishing site to find out how the fishing is at 2pm on a Thursday while they are sitting at 2pm on a Thursday.

You wonder about Saturday.

The site knew about Saturday the whole time. It just kept it to itself.

Then my own phone beat me

Built it, shipped it, opened it on my iPhone, swiped straight into another Safari tab.

The handle sits at the far left when the map shows now, which is where it sits nearly always. And the iPhone keeps the outer edge of the screen for its own back and forward swipe. The phone takes that gesture before the website ever hears about it. So the one thing I had just spent days on could not be grabbed with a thumb.

Come on.

So what do you do? You cannot ask Apple politely. You move the whole track in from the edges and you make the knob round and fat so it stops looking like just another tick mark on the timeline. Nobody tries to drag a tick mark. That one is on me too.

Three small things from the same week

  • First light and last light on every spot page. The two times a fishing day turns on, and they were nowhere on the site.
  • Swell now shows its period. 1.1m at 12 seconds and 1.1m at 6 seconds are not the same day. You knew that. The site did not say it.
  • Wind says what it does at that spot. Not just "N 7kt", but whether that is offshore, in your face, or across you.

What I do not know

Whether anyone will find the slider. It sits under the map. A control that has to explain itself either explains itself or it does not, and I am too close to it to tell. If you looked at that thing and had no idea what it was for, tell me. That is more useful to me than a compliment.

The rock platform pins turn red on the slider when the swell and wind for that hour say so. Same rule as always: a forecast tells you when the water turns. It never tells you a ledge is safe to stand on.

Right. I am going down to look at the water instead of the numbers for once.
