Where to Catch Dusky Flathead

Newcastle

Tackle & Setup

Rod & Reel

Rod 7ft medium-light spin, 4-8kg, fast action
Reel 2500-3000 size spin reel
Mainline 10-15lb braid (PE 0.8-1.0)
Why Lighter gear = more bites. Flathead have hard mouths so fast action helps set hooks.

Leader

Material Fluorocarbon
Strength 12-16lb (6-8kg)
Length 1-1.5m
Why Fluoro sinks, is invisible, and resists abrasion from their sandpaper teeth.

Style TT HeadlockZ HD or TT Head Hunter
Hook Size 2/0-3/0
Tip TT jigheads from BCF use Mustad hooks. Match weight to depth.

Bait

  • Live yellowtail (yakka)
  • Live herring
  • Whitebait (dead or alive)
  • Mullet strips

Rig: Running sinker rig with 1-2oz ball sinker, size 2/0-4/0 circle hook

Tip: Hook live bait through nose or behind dorsal. Let flathead swallow - they gulp headfirst.

How to Catch Dusky Flathead

Threading a Soft Plastic

  1. Hold plastic against jighead to measure where hook point exits
  2. Pierce centre of head, push hook through middle of plastic
  3. Exit hook at measured point - plastic should sit straight, not curved
  4. Tip: Dab superglue on head to stop plastic sliding down

Technique

Basic
Cast, let sink to bottom (watch line go slack), lift rod tip 30cm then let it fall back. Repeat. Most bites happen on the drop.
Advanced
Drift with wind/tide over sand flats. Cast up-current, slow hop back. Target weed edges, channel drop-offs, and sand patches between reef.
Retrieve
Slow and low. 2-3 rod lifts, pause 2-3 seconds. Flathead are lazy - bring the lure to them.
Presentation
Keep contact with bottom. If you're not occasionally hitting sand, you're too high.

Pro Tips

  • Early morning incoming tide is prime time - baitfish push onto flats, flathead follow
  • Polarised sunnies help spot them sitting in sand - look for dark shapes
  • Lake Mac flathead love warm water near Eraring power station outfall in winter
  • Big fish (70cm+) often sit deeper 4-6m on channel edges at Swansea
