Tackle & Setup

Rod & Reel

Rod 7-9ft light spin, 1-3kg, moderate action
Reel 1000-2500 size spin reel
Mainline 4-6lb braid or 4-6lb mono
Why Light as possible - whiting are spooky and you need to feel delicate bites.

Leader

Material Fluorocarbon
Strength 4-6lb (2-3kg)
Length 60cm-1m
Why Light leader essential in clear shallow water. They will refuse thick line.

Hooks

Style Long shank (easy removal) or circle hooks
Size #4-#6 long shank, #2-#4 circle
Brand Mustad Long Shank, Mustad Circle Hooks
Why Long shank hooks are easier to remove from their small mouths.

Sinkers

Weight None to size 0 (tiny ball sinker)
Style Unweighted, running sinker, or paternoster with tiny ball
Tip Less weight = more natural presentation = more bites. Unweighted is best if you can cast it.

Lure Recommendations

Name Colour Size Note
Bassday Sugapen Splash C66, C137 (natural prawn) 75mm BCF exclusive. Walk-the-dog popper. Deadly on flats.

Bait

  • Beach worm — The #1 bait. Fresh pumped or from tackle shop.
  • Live yabbies (nippers) — Pump them yourself from sand flats.
  • Tube worms — Dig from muddy areas. Thread whole onto hook.
  • Peeled prawn — Readily available. Cut small pieces.

Thread worm onto hook leaving 1-2cm trailing. For yabbies, hook through tail.

How to Catch Sand Whiting

Whiting Paternoster Rig

  1. Tie small swivel to end of mainline
  2. Attach 30cm of 4lb fluoro below swivel, size 0 ball sinker at bottom
  3. Attach 40cm dropper above swivel with long shank hook
  4. Or simply: running ball sinker, swivel, 60cm leader, hook. Keep it simple!

Technique

Basic
Wade knee-deep at dawn on incoming tide. Cast into first gutter or onto sand flats. Let bait sit, watch rod tip for taps. Small lift to set hook.
Advanced
Surface lures in summer are deadly! Cast Sugapen onto flats, twitch-pause-twitch. Whiting smash it on the surface - explosive takes.
Retrieve
Bait: Let it sit or very slow drag. Lures: Walk-the-dog with pauses.
Presentation
Stealth is key. Wade slowly, no splashing. Cast beyond fish and work bait back.

Pro Tips

  • First 2 hours of incoming tide floods the flats - whiting follow the water in
  • Polarised glasses let you sight-cast to cruising fish
  • Summer run (Dec-Feb) = fish Stockton Beach wash zone, Naru flats
  • Beach worms: dig where wet sand meets dry, look for their blow holes
  • Morning glass-out conditions = surface lure time!
