Tackle & Setup

Rod & Reel

Rod 9-10ft beach spin, 6-10kg, moderate action (casting distance important)
Reel 4000-5000 size spin reel
Mainline 15-20lb braid
Why Long rod for distance casting. Salmon often feed beyond the breakers.

Leader

Material Fluorocarbon or mono
Strength 20-30lb (10-15kg)

How to Catch Australian Salmon

Beach Fishing Running Rig

  1. Thread 2-3oz ball sinker onto mainline
  2. Tie swivel to mainline
  3. Attach 1m of 30lb leader
  4. Tie 2/0-4/0 hook to leader
  5. Hook pilchard through head or gang hook
  6. Cast into deeper gutter, wait for rod to load

Technique

Basic
Scan for birds diving - it's the #1 indicator of salmon. Cast metals into the school, wind FAST. No pauses. If they're not there, keep moving along beach.
Advanced
Work deeper gutters at dawn. Look for "nervous water" (baitfish rippling surface). Match lure size to baitfish size. Bust-ups are chaotic - cast past and wind through.
Retrieve
FAST. Salmon chase fast-moving baitfish. If you're not winding hard enough, wind harder.
Presentation
It's a numbers game. Keep casting and keep moving until you find the school.

Finding Australian Salmon

Birds Terns and seagulls diving = salmon pushing bait to surface. Follow the birds.
Water Look for dark patches (baitfish schools) or "nervous water" (surface disturbance)
Timing Dawn is prime. Schools often move through on the incoming tide.
Moving They don't stay still. If you catch one and then nothing, move along the beach.

Pro Tips

  • Birds diving = SALMON. Drop everything and get there fast.
  • Winter (Jul-Sep) is peak season. Schools push through on migration.
  • BLEED IMMEDIATELY - salmon flesh goes soft within minutes. Cut gills, ice down.
  • No bag or size limit but take only what you need. They're a valuable recreational fish.
  • Beach gutters (deeper troughs between sandbars) hold fish
  • Fast retrieve. Then faster. Salmon like speed.
  • They're great eating if bled and iced immediately. Poor if not.
