Fishing Swansea Channel โ€” Lake Macquarie Guide

Channel Best: Dawn, Dusk, Night Tide: Strong tidal flow
The main ocean entrance to Lake Macquarie. Deep channel with strong tidal flow. Rock training walls on both sides. Baitfish concentrate in current lines.
Swansea Channel marks the entrance to Lake Macquarie and it is the most productive fishing spot in the region. The deep channel creates fast tidal flow that stacks baitfish against the rock training walls, and predators know it. From December to March, kingfish patrol The Drop Over, where the channel floor drops from 4 metres to 10 metres. Live yakkas on 50lb trace with 5/0 circle hooks are the local standard. Serious anglers cast stickbaits โ€” Nomad Riptide 125mm โ€” across the current at dawn.

Beyond kingfish season, the channel produces year-round. Squid work the rock walls at night under any available lighting, mulloway cruise the deep hole at the southern end (10 metres plus) after dark on the outgoing tide, and salmon stack up in the white water near the bar when the water cools from July to September. Snapper have been increasingly common since the commercial netting ban โ€” 50cm-plus fish are taken regularly on berleyed paternoster rigs during the cooler months.

Parking fills fast on weekends. Get to Swansea Wharf before dawn or use the Black Neds Bay side. Watch the current โ€” it exceeds 4 knots on big tides and has caught out plenty of boaters. The 6-knot speed limit in the channel is enforced by RMS.
