Where to Catch Snapper

Lake Macquarie

Tackle & Setup

Rod & Reel

Rod 6-7ft medium spin, 6-10kg, moderate action
Reel 3000-4000 size spin reel
Mainline 15-20lb braid (PE 1.0-1.5)
Why Medium weight for boat fishing over reef. Need backbone for big fish but sensitivity for bites.

Leader

Material Fluorocarbon
Strength 20-40lb (10-20kg)
Length 2-3m
Why Long fluoro leader is essential - snapper are line shy and reef edges will fray leader.

Sinkers

Weight 2-4oz ball or snapper sinker (depending on depth/current)
Style Running sinker for bait, or paternoster rig
Tip Use just enough weight to reach bottom. Too heavy = unnatural presentation.

Lure Recommendations

Name Colour Size Note
Zerek Fish Trap Soft Vibe Gold, Silver, OG 95mm, 110mm BCF stocks. Slow roll near bottom over reef.
Berkley Gulp! Jerk Shad Pearl White, Smelt 5" Scented paddle tail. Jig to bottom, slow hop.
ZMan GrubZ Pearl, Motor Oil 4" Classic curly tail for snapper.

Bait

  • Fresh squid — Whole baby squid or strips. The #1 snapper bait.
  • Squid head/tentacles — Tough, stays on hook. Great in berley trail.
  • Whole pilchard — Hook through head or gang hooked.
  • Strip baits — Bonito, tuna belly, mullet fillet. Tough and oily.
  • Live yakkas — Premium bait for big snapper. Hook behind dorsal.

Fresh is best. Keep squid frozen, cut strips as needed. Hook whole squid through head.

Berley

Mix Pilchard oil, crushed pilchards, old bread, bran. Mix into paste.
Method Berley cage or onion bag tied to anchor rope. Constant drip is key.
Tip No berley = probably no snapper. It's that important.

How to Catch Snapper

Snapper Running Sinker Rig

  1. Thread 2-4oz ball sinker onto mainline
  2. Add small bead (protects knot)
  3. Tie swivel to mainline
  4. Attach 2-3m of 30lb fluoro leader
  5. Tie 4/0-6/0 circle hook to end
  6. Bait with squid strip or whole pilchard

Technique

Basic
Anchor up-current of reef structure. Set berley cage. Fish baits in berley trail at various depths. Wait for rod to load, then wind tight (circle hook sets itself).
Advanced
First light is prime - be anchored and set up before dawn. Work lures tight to reef edges. Big snapper often sit deeper (15-25m) on outer reef sections.
Retrieve
Bait: Let it sit in berley trail. Lures: Slow lift and drop, or slow roll near bottom.
Presentation
Patience. It can take 30-60 minutes for berley to bring snapper in. Don't rush.
