Directly in front of SLSC in the first wave gutter The sandbar here creates a consistent shallow gutter that traps bait on every tide. Wave action exposes pipis and worms that whiting feed on. LOOK FOR: Darker water between beach and the first line of breaking waves.
200m north where a permanent sandbar creates a deeper gutter Less foot traffic means less spooked fish. The sandbar geometry here holds water even on lower tides, keeping whiting feeding longer. LOOK FOR: Dark water running parallel to shore.
Any area where you see small baitfish jumping Nervous baitfish means something is chasing them. Where bait concentrates, whiting follow to feed on the same food source being stirred up. LOOK FOR: Small fish leaping, shimmering water surface.
